Barbara Hepworth s'est installée pour la première fois en Cornouailles avec son mari Ben Nicholson au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale ; en 1949, elle a travaillé au Trewyn Studio, qui devint également son domicile à partir de 1950.
Conformément à ses voeux, ces lieux devinrent après sa mort -en 1975- un musée, placé sous la direction de la Tate Gallery.
La Tate Gallery de St Ives a ouvert en 1993.
