Introduction, par J. Kirk T. Varnedoe, avec Elizabeth Streicher. - Post-face, par Dorothea Carus.

The noted German artist Max Klinger (1857-1920) is admired chiefly today for his etchings which are now seen to prefigure Surrealism and other twentieth-century trends.

"On the technical level, Klinger was a virtuoso. Klinger's world is one of brooding melancholy. His etchings are dazzling as he depicts fantasies about love and death, sexual pychoses and fetish obsessions, bizarre nigtmares, and in the entire Glove cycle the glove itself seems brilliantly Freudian."
