"Det Kongelike Selskab for Norges Vel" started collecting antiquities in 1811. Their aim was the foundation of a National Museum of Antiquities in Norway.
The collections were donated to the recently founded University of Oslo in 1823 and in 1902 the Museum moved to its present building.
"The original collections included objects from all parts of Norway, but as archeological museums were established in Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsö during the nineteenth century, most of items in our collections come from south-eastern Norway."
